Every year on October 22, Orthodox Christians remember the Apostle James Alpheyev, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ who were part of his inner circle. His name is repeatedly found in the Gospels, but the details of his biography and preaching path remain little known: very little reliable information has come down to our days. Izvestia tells us who the Apostle James Alfeyev is, why his memorial day is celebrated on October 22, and what traditions are associated with this date.

Who is Iakov Alfeyev: a detailed biography

James, called in the church tradition "James Alphaeus" or "James, son of Alphaeus", is one of the 12 apostles of Jesus Christ, whose name appears in the synoptic lists of disciples. In biblical texts and in the church tradition, he is often identified with James the Lesser in order to distinguish him from James, the son of Zebedee.

Most of what is known about James himself is that he was a member of the circle of 12 and was present among the first followers of Christ. Detailed information about his origin, early years, and ministry is almost not preserved in canonical sources. Modern Biblical scholars and church reference books emphasize that the historical body of this figure is minimal and largely relies on later hagiographic and patristic information.

In some apocryphal lives and in the popular church tradition, James is referred to as the brother of the apostle and evangelist Matthew or is associated with other early Christian figures. However, such related statements have different interpretations in the sources and are not unequivocally confirmed in the primary texts of the New Testament.

According to legend, after the descent of the Holy Spirit, the apostles separated for missionary work, and James Alphaeus preached in Palestine and in the border regions. In some hagiographical accounts, he is credited with trips to Edessa, Gaza and other cities, as well as miracles and healings that accompanied his ministry.

When is the memorial day of the Apostle James Alpheyev

The memory of the Apostle James Alfeyev in the Orthodox tradition is celebrated on October 22 in a new style. At the same time, in the Orthodox tradition, James is mentioned in the Council of the 12 Apostles on June 30 (July 13, Old style).

For Orthodox believers, October 22 is memorial Day, when appropriate services are held in churches, hagiographic and theological texts about the apostle are read, and believers can turn to his memory in prayer.

Traditions and customs on the memorial Day of the Apostle James Alfeyev

The folk and parish practice of celebrating the day of memory of Jacob Alfeyev has been developing for centuries and combines official liturgical elements with regional customs and omens. During the church part of the day, the faithful are called to prayer, to participate in the liturgy and to remember the apostolic feat. Churches publish relevant texts and organize memorial services, where hagiographic fragments and addresses to the saint are read.

An important feature of the Orthodox reading of this day is the emphasis on the humility of apostolic ministry and on continuing the mission of the apostles through church tradition.

Folk signs and economic prohibitions related to October 22 are widespread in Russian-speaking and neighboring regions and often appear in popular religious publications. Among the most repeated recommendations are not to engage in sewing and repairs, not to fix shoes and clothes, not to take on new big things and undertakings, avoid quarrels and harsh words, not to make dates and not to make new romantic connections on this day.

These prohibitions are explained as a practical and symbolic precaution: the day of the apostle's memory is seen as a time of spiritual concentration, repentance and silence, when worldly worries and noisy activity are inappropriate. It is also emphasized that such prohibitions are not necessarily canonical in nature, they are mainly popular church beliefs, varying by region and community, and their observance remains at the discretion of the believer.
