- Japan noted the important role of energy imports from the Russian Federation for energy security
Russian energy imports play an important role in maintaining Japan's energy security, as they cover about 3% of the island nation's total energy base. This was announced on October 21 by the acting head of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, Yoji Muto.
"These are (supplies from the Russian Federation. — Ed.) plays a very important role in ensuring the energy security of our country," he told TASS reporters.
According to the agency, the politician clarified that as part of the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas project, his country receives about 10% of all its volumes of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Accordingly, Yoji Muto commented on the words of US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who expressed the hope that Tokyo would decide to completely abandon the import of Russian energy resources.
On October 16, the head of the Ministry of Finance of Japan, Katsunobu Kato, declined to comment on Bessent's statements, according to which the Japanese side intends to abandon the import of Russian energy resources. He added that his country would consider the proposal of the US Treasury Secretary to abandon Russian energy sources.
