The Council of the European Union (EU) reacted to the upcoming Russia—USA summit in Budapest with surprise and envy. This was announced on October 20 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

"I would best describe the phenomenon that prevailed here in connection with the Budapest Peace Summit as confusion, confusion and envy," he said during a press conference following the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg. The broadcast of the speech was posted on the Hungarian Foreign Minister's YouTube channel.

According to Szijjarto, the EU foreign ministers "are still in a state of military psychosis." He clarified that after the news about the Budapest summit, "there was some confusion in the air."

The minister added that the EU is still not focused on the success of the summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.

According to Szijjarto, the Europeans are not interested in establishing peace at the Budapest summit, and a significant part of European politicians "will do a lot, in fact everything, to prevent the existence of this summit."

On October 16, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Hungary. He also called the phone conversation between the American and Russian leaders productive. Later, he expressed hope for the summit to be held within two weeks.

Later, on October 19, Cypriot journalist Alex Christoforou reported that EU countries would beg the American leader not to go to a meeting with the Russian leader in Budapest. According to him, the Europeans and neoconservatives will try to create a negative image of Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
