In Orthodoxy, the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God occupies a special place as a symbol of spiritual protection and family well-being. Its history dates back to 1579, when the Virgin appeared to a nine-year-old girl and pointed out the place of the hidden image, saved from a devastating fire in Kazan. Since then, the icon has become an image of hope and maternal protection, revered throughout Russia. Special importance is attached to her participation in historical events — in particular, prayers in front of the icon accompanied the people's militia of Minin and Pozharsky in the liberation of Moscow in 1612. The Kazan icon is considered the patroness of families, faith and the state, giving solace and strength in trials. For more information about the meaning and history of the icon— see the Izvestia article.

The history of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is one of the most revered shrines of the Orthodox Church. Its history begins in 1579 in the city of Kazan, which only recently fell to the Russian Empire. According to legend, after a severe fire, the nine-year-old girl Matrona, the daughter of the royal Sagittarius, appeared to the Virgin and pointed out the place where her image was hidden. This image was found in the ashes, which marked the beginning of widespread popular and ecclesiastical veneration of the icon.

Since then, the icon of the Kazan Mother of God has symbolized protection and patronage, being considered a talisman not only for the city of Kazan, but also for the whole of Russia. She is revered as an intercessor in difficult times, as well as a source of comfort and hope for believers. The Kazan Bogoroditsky Monastery was built on the site of the icon's appearance, an important spiritual center from which the spread of veneration of the image throughout the country began.

The significance of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Orthodoxy

The Kazan icon is considered the patron saint of the family, country and faith. Believers turn to her in prayers for the protection of the home, the strengthening of spiritual bonds and the well-being of loved ones. In Orthodoxy, the icon symbolizes the love and mercy of the Most Holy Theotokos, her warm maternal care and willingness to help in difficult moments of life.

The celebrations in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God on July 21 and November 4 are associated with two significant historical events. July 21 (July 8, Old style) marks the day of the icon's discovery in 1579: according to legend, the Virgin appeared to a nine-year-old girl in Kazan and pointed out the place where the shrine was hidden, which helped preserve faith in difficult times. This day is called "Summer Kazan".

The second holiday, November 4, is called "Autumn Kazan" and is dedicated to the liberation of Moscow from Polish invaders in 1612 during the Time of Troubles. Before the decisive campaign, the people's militia led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky prayed in front of the Kazan Icon, which became a symbol of support and assistance to the Russian army. This day is now also celebrated as National Unity Day in Russia.

The role of the Kazan Icon in weddings and family rituals

The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is closely connected with family traditions, especially with the wedding, an important church sacrament of family creation. It is customary to install the image in the home of a young family in order to strengthen the spiritual foundation of marriage, protect the union and bless the spouses for a long and happy life.

Many families still have the tradition of praying at the Kazan Icon, especially on family holidays and important events. She accompanies the sacrament of baptism, is part of the home iconostasis and helps to preserve unity and faith in the family.

The veneration of the Kazan Icon at the wedding is an expression of hope for the gracious presence of the Mother of God in the life of a married couple, support in trials and the joy of a joint journey.

The text of the prayer in front of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

The classic text of the prayer in front of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, which Orthodox Christians read to protect the family and strengthen spiritual bonds, includes the following words:

"O Great and Most Holy Lady of the whole world, Lady Theotokos! With faith, love and trembling, standing before Your miraculous icon, we beseech You: do not turn away from those who come to You, ask, Merciful Mother of God, Your Son and our God, the Lord Jesus Christ, that He preserve us from all evil, give us happiness in family life, and protect our country from wars and civil strife. He defended His Holy Church from religious wars, schisms and persecutions.

We have no other help, we have no other hope, except You, Pure Virgin, Mother of God: You are the All-powerful Helper and Intercessor for all Orthodox Christians, all believers who pray to You.

Deliver all of us who turn to You with faith and love from falling into sin, from choosing the wrong path, from the slander and intrigues of evil people, from all sorrows, from all grief, from sudden death. Grant, Most Holy Lady, to our souls repentance, understanding and awareness of their sins, patience, humility and purity of thought! Help us to correct our lives according to the commandments of God, so that, with a pure heart and trembling soul, we may gratefully sing praises of Your greatness and be worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven, where, with all the saints of God, we rejoice and glorify You, Most Holy Virgin, together with the Holy Trinity — the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen to that."

It is believed that the prayer text helps to strengthen the connection with the Mother of God and is a spiritual support in family life.
