- The United States warned about NATO's attempts to disrupt the meeting between Putin and Trump in Budapest
The NATO bloc will try to disrupt a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Donald Trump in Budapest scheduled for the next two weeks. This opinion was expressed on October 17 by American political scientist and journalist Garland Nixon in an interview with Izvestia.
"I think that in the near future, if the meeting [between Putin and Trump] is indeed scheduled for the next two weeks, we will see how NATO will do everything possible to stop it," he said.
According to the political scientist, the military bloc will try to block the summit, as this is important for the narrative that "the Russians are allegedly unreasonable." At the same time, the upcoming meeting could really make a dent in advancing such an agenda.
The journalist also noted that disrupting the summit would be useful for NATO, as it stretches time.
"I think the NATO hawks were expecting that President Trump was about to announce the transfer of [missiles] to Ukraine." Tomahawk, and this could possibly lead to a full—scale clash between NATO <...> and Russia," the journalist said.
The political scientist concluded that some people "in tiny villages such as Estonia and Latvia" may want to escalate the confrontation between the Russian Federation and the United States, but the leaders of the two superpowers themselves do not intend to allow such a conflict.
On October 16, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Hungary and called the phone conversation with the Russian president productive. He later stated that he hoped to hold the summit within two weeks.
As Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov noted, the conversation itself took place at the initiative of Putin, who began the conversation by congratulating Trump on the success of his work to normalize the situation in the Gaza Strip. It is noted that Trump mentioned Budapest as a meeting place with Putin, who in response supported this choice.
Later, the Axios portal reported that the telephone conversation between Putin and Trump came as a surprise to the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky. The statement by the American president about the talks with Putin and the upcoming meeting in Hungary took the Ukrainian delegation by surprise.
