- The Russian Ambassador to Moldova spoke about the signs of the Ukrainian scenario in the religious sphere of the republic
There are alarming signs of developments in the Ukrainian scenario in the religious sphere of Moldova in the Russian Federation, Russian Ambassador to the republic Oleg Ozerov told Izvestia on October 16.
"In the religious sphere of Moldova, we are witnessing alarming signs of the development of events according to the Ukrainian scenario. The "Archdiocese of Bessarabia," directly funded by the Romanian state, is acting impudently at the suggestion of Bucharest, openly trying to outbid priests and seize local parishes, often with the support of the authorities. Through encroachment on the Church, geopolitical projects alien to them are being imposed on the Moldovan people, the purpose of which is to turn the country into another "anti—Russia", completely depriving it of sovereignty and independence," he said.
Historical experience, including in Ukraine, shows that provoking religious schisms threatens to create conflict at the most fundamental level. However, such a scenario is unlikely to be implemented for the Moldovan people, Ozerov stressed.
"The majority of Moldovan citizens, as public opinion polls show, are in solidarity in their desire to defend their identity, maintain close cultural and spiritual ties with our country," the diplomat said.
Earlier, on September 22, Archbishop Markell of Balti and Falesti appealed to US Vice President Jay Dee Vance with a request to protect the Orthodox Church of Moldova from attacks from the pro-European government.
Earlier, on June 8, Ilan Shor, the leader of the opposition political bloc Pobeda, accused the Moldovan authorities of trying to ban Orthodoxy in the country. According to him, the republic's leadership is not interested in preserving Orthodox traditions.
