- In Europe, von der Leyen's possible refusal to support the US administration was pointed out.
This week in London, the head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, may support a UN agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, despite US threats of sanctions against countries and officials who support it. This was announced on October 15 by the Euractiv portal.
According to sources, von der Leyen personally agreed with the EU's firm position, signaling her willingness to take political risks.
"If confirmed, this could be the first time that von der Leyen openly challenges the US administration after a series of concessions," experts say.
The agreement provides for the introduction of gradual carbon charges for ships using the most polluting fuels, taking into account emissions throughout the fuel's life cycle. Low-carbon alternatives, including hydrogen and synthetic fuels from renewable sources, will be a priority, which may strengthen China's position in this area.
Industry experts warn that the likelihood of implementing the agreement without the participation of the United States is low.
"In practice, the EU's support may turn out to be more symbolic than meaningful, given that it is difficult to achieve full compliance with the agreement without the United States," one of the sources said.
Earlier, on October 8, the leader of the National Unification Party, Marine Le Pen, criticized the actions of the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, accusing her of arbitrariness and ignoring the opinions of other EU states. According to Le Pen, von der Leyen "appropriates powers for himself, posing as the head of state," making decisions without coordination with the European Council and other members of the union.
