Norilsk Nickel is not inferior to the world leadership in the production of nickel and platinoids, while the company completely covers Russia's domestic needs for rare metals. This became known on October 14 at a meeting between Vladimir Putin and the head of the enterprise, Vladimir Potanin. In addition, Norilsk Nickel is actively engaged in reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere and solves some social issues, in particular, it helps with housing construction in Norilsk.

What was discussed at the meeting

Norilsk Nickel, the world's largest producer of palladium and high-grade nickel, completely covers Russia's needs for rare metals, said Vladimir Potanin. According to him, the company has to work in difficult conditions of declining global product prices, disruption of logistics and payment chains, as well as the need to refocus on new, unusual markets for Norilsk Nickel.

Nevertheless, the company does not concede its leadership in the world in the production of nickel and platinoids. "We have platinoids, gold, and many rare metals, with which we fully cover the needs in our country. The surpluses are successfully sold on the foreign market," he said.

The impact of the company's activities on the environment was also touched upon: the president paid special attention to this topic. The head of Norilsk Nickel assured that emissions are decreasing. In addition, the company has implemented new systems that make it possible to predict the volume of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. And thanks to the Clean Air program, they have been reduced by more than 20%. "I know that new technologies are being introduced. They are being brought to ensure that they are not only purchased and installed, but also that they really work and improve the environmental situation," said Vladimir Putin.

This year, the company has made increased commitments — by the end of 2025, it will double the amount of recycled sulfur dioxide. "It is safe to say that in the near future Norilsk will become a truly clean city," said the head of Norilsk Nickel.

Speaking about the social sphere, Vladimir Potanin recalled that Norilsk Nickel has an agreement with the government of the Krasnoyarsk Territory for 80 billion rubles, and another 100 billion rubles are invested in other programs of the city that are not included in the agreement. Among the social obligations, the head of the company called housing construction the most acute problem for Norilsk: More than 2,000 families have already improved their living conditions.

On the same day, Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, with whom he discussed the upcoming state visit of the leader of the republic to Russia. The Russian president also spoke with the head of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, discussing with him the strengthening of a comprehensive strategic partnership.
