Von der Leyen announced Montenegro's possible accession to the EU as early as 2028
Montenegro may join the European Union (EU) as early as 2028. This was announced on October 14 by the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen at a press conference during a visit to the country.
"You are determined to finish all the negotiating chapters (sections of the EU accession negotiations — Ed.) next year. We support your ambition for 2028," she said. A fragment of the speech of the head of the EC was published on the official YouTube channel of the organization.
Von der Leyen stressed that the European Commission "likes ambitions." Montenegro received the status of a candidate for EU membership in 2010.
Montenegrin MP Nada Lakovic told Izvestia on August 26 that Montenegro plans to end EU accession negotiations by the end of 2026 and join the bloc by 2028. She noted that the country has an ambitious plan to complete all negotiations by the end of 2026, and "everything is going according to plan."
