Which onion is better to grow on the windowsill

Various types of onions are suitable for growing on the windowsill, each of which has its own characteristics. The batun onion is a perennial variety that forms tufts of thin green feathers. It is characterized by high cold resistance and is able to grow at temperatures from +5 °C, which makes it an excellent choice for home cultivation in autumn and winter.

Shallots are small onions with many teeth, which have a mild taste and aroma. This variety grows well at home, while its small size does not require much space, which is ideal for window sills.

Leeks are distinguished by their long white stems and dark green leaves. For its successful cultivation, it is necessary to use deeper tanks, as well as ensure regular watering. It requires more space and maintenance, but at the same time, due to its specific taste, it is often used in cooking.

Turnip onion is a traditional variety that can also be grown on the windowsill. However, unlike other varieties, it requires more attention and space for normal growth, which makes it less convenient for the limited conditions of the apartment.

Green onions are the most popular option for home growing. It grows quickly and does not require complex care. This onion can be grown even in small containers, and it will delight with fresh feathers at almost any time of the year.

Requirements for growing conditions

Onions require a lot of light for active growth, so they should be placed on a windowsill where they will receive enough sunlight. A south or east window will be optimal, as they will provide the most light. If natural light is not enough, phytolamps can be used for additional lighting to support healthy plant growth.

The ideal temperature for onion growth is +18...+24°C. It is important to avoid sudden temperature changes and drafts, which can negatively affect the plant. Onions also require evenly moistened soil, but waterlogging can lead to root rot, so it is important to monitor the moisture level. Water the onion when the topsoil begins to dry out to avoid excess moisture.

To plant onions, use light, loose soil with good drainage. You can purchase a ready-made mixture for vegetable crops or prepare the soil yourself by mixing peat, humus and sand in equal proportions. This will provide the plant with comfortable conditions for growth and development.

Ways to grow onions on the windowsill

One of the most popular methods is growing onions in water. To do this, choose healthy medium-sized bulbs, remove the top layer of husks and lightly trim the top. Then place the bulb in a container with water so that the roots touch the water and the tip remains above the surface. It is important to change the water daily or every two days to prevent rotting. Green feathers can be cut off as early as 2-3 weeks after the start of growth, which makes this method quick and convenient for obtaining fresh herbs.

Another way is to grow onions in the ground. To do this, use containers with drainage holes, at the bottom of which you need to place a layer of expanded clay to ensure drainage. Then fill the container with the prepared soil, leaving 2-3 cm to the edge. Bulbs should be planted to a depth of 2-3 cm, leaving a distance of 2-3 cm between them. Water the plants regularly, keeping the soil moist. Green feathers can be cut off 3-4 weeks after planting, obtaining fresh herbs for use in cooking.

Danger to pets

Onions, including its varieties — green and leek — belong to the onion family and contain compounds that are dangerous to the feline body. Even a small amount of these products can cause serious poisoning in cats.

The toxicity of onions is due to the presence of N-propyl disulfide, which damages red blood cells, red blood cells, leading to their destruction and the development of anemia. Symptoms of poisoning may not appear immediately, but only after damage to a significant number of red blood cells. Anemia can develop as early as 12 hours after eating onions or garlic, but it usually occurs two to five days after exposure.

The most common signs of poisoning cats with onions and garlic are lethargy, loss of appetite, pallor of the mucous membranes, fever, vomiting and diarrhea, and rapid breathing. If you suspect that the cat has eaten a product containing onions, garlic, or other toxic ingredients, do not try to help yourself — especially do not induce vomiting without the advice of a veterinarian. Procrastination can cost an animal its health, and sometimes its life.

Care tips and possible problems

If the onion does not grow, it may not have enough light or heat. Make sure that the plant receives enough sunlight and is at an optimal temperature. It is also important to monitor the humidity level, as waterlogging can lead to the appearance of midges. To avoid this, reduce the frequency of watering and ensure good drainage, which will help prevent water stagnation in the soil.

If onion growth has slowed down, you can feed it with a weak solution of complex fertilizer. This will help activate the growth and improve the quality of the greenery. When the onion reaches the desired height, you can start harvesting. To do this, cut off the green feathers with a sharp knife, leaving 2-3 cm from the base to allow the plant to continue growing and provide fresh greenery for a long time.
