October is the final month of the holiday season. It is ideal for planting plants for the next year, as well as preparing the garden for spring. Izvestia tells you which crops can be planted in October and shares the lunar sowing calendar.

What to plant in the garden in October

Some vegetable crops need stratification — exposure to cold for better germination. The fact is that the seeds of cilantro, dill, carrots, celery and some other crops contain many essential oils that slow down their growth. Therefore, they are specially planted in October, so that the oils are naturally washed out over the winter, and the seeds are "hardened". Such sowing is called podzim, it allows you to harvest three weeks earlier.

The following crops are most often planted in October:

  • Beetroot — it should be planted at a depth of about 5 cm, when the ground is already a little frozen. This will help to avoid too early germination and death of crops.;
  • Dill, carrots, coriander, parsley, celery — these crops are sown in weed-free soil to a depth of no more than 2 cm. Peat, sand, ash and mineral fertilizers should be added to the garden, and the seeds should be sprinkled with humus and mulched with dry peat.;
  • Onions can be planted to a depth of 3 cm. When severe frosts occur, it is necessary to insulate the plantings with a layer of peat or humus 8-10 cm thick to protect the plants from freezing.;
  • Garlic is a resistant crop that will survive any temperature changes. The depth of sealing of the teeth depends on their size: large teeth should be buried deeper, and small ones closer to the surface.

In addition to these crops, you can also plant seeds of tomatoes, sunflowers and corn. After wintering, they will produce strong and seasoned seedlings. If there is a greenhouse on the site, it is worth planting leeks, radishes, coriander, lettuce, dill and celery in it.

What to plant in the garden in October

October is also a great time to plant fruit trees and berry bushes. Many gardeners prefer autumn planting, as the pests that can damage young plants have already gone into hibernation, and in the spring the seedlings will become much stronger.

Apple and pear trees take root well in autumn planting. Rowan, bird cherry and sea buckthorn can also be planted in autumn. These trees quickly adapt to new conditions if the planting has been done correctly — it is important that the root neck of the tree is not buried in the soil.

Also, in the second month of autumn, you can plant currants, raspberries, viburnum and honeysuckle. These shrubs take root well in autumn and will yield a rich harvest next year.

In addition, October is great for planting flowers that require stratification. These varieties include aquilegia, delphinium, lavender, hellebores and clematis. Peonies and lilies are also sown in winter.

In order for the garden to successfully overwinter, it is necessary to prepare it in advance for the cold: prune trees and shrubs, treat them with fungicides to prevent diseases, collect fallen leaves and dig up the beds.

Lunar sowing calendar for October 2025

Many gardeners and gardeners follow the lunar sowing calendar, as they believe that the phases of the Earth's satellite affect plant growth and health. So, it is customary to plant plants that grow upward on the growing moon, and root crops and other crops that stretch downward on the waning ones.

Phases of the Moon in October 2025

  • The waxing Moon (October 1-6) is the ideal period for planting fruit trees, shrubs, and flowers.;
  • The full moon (October 7) is a good time for pruning and other non—planting activities.;
  • The waning Moon (October 8-20) is the time for planting root crops such as onions, potatoes, beets and carrots. The exception is October 20, which is considered an unsuccessful date for any gardening work.;
  • New Moon (October 21) — Gardeners usually avoid planting during the new moon, as it is believed that this will have a bad effect on plant growth.;
  • Waxing Moon (October 22-31) — you can plant flowers and do other gardening.

The most favorable days for gardening in October are considered to be the 1st and 28th. But on the 20th and 21st, it is recommended to refrain from any manipulation of plants.

Earlier, Andrey Tumanov, chairman of the Moscow Horticultural Union public organization, spoke about the dangers of the popular fertilizer for the garden.
