Politico has learned about a possible ban on wearing the burqa and niqab in Italy
The Italian ruling Brothers of Italy party intends to ban the wearing of burqas and niqabs in public places and impose a fine in the amount of €300 to €3 thousand. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on October 8, citing a statement by the deputy and one of the initiators of the bill, Andrea Delmastro.
"This proposal is part of a broader bill aimed at combating what the right-wing party of Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni called 'cultural separatism' related to Islam," the publication says.
Andrea Delmastro, one of the initiators of the bill, noted that religious freedom is sacred, but must be carried out in full respect for the constitution and principles of the Italian state.
The proposed bill also provides for tougher penalties for forced marriages and requirements for religious groups to disclose information about any foreign funding, the newspaper reports.
On December 15, 2024, Iran's National Security Council demanded that parliament suspend consideration of the draft law on hijabs, as the country's government decided to propose to parliament to fix the shortcomings. According to the Iranian government, the necessary infrastructure for the implementation of the new law on "chastity and hijab" is missing, and some of its articles contain problems and inaccuracies that need to be corrected.
