Rostelecom announced a temporary Internet restriction in Chukotka
The repair of the underwater fiber-optic communication line (PVOL) connecting Sakhalin and Kamchatka will lead to a temporary decrease in Internet speed in Chukotka. This was announced on October 7 on the website of the district government.
"Rostelecom announces plans to complete the repair of the air defense system between Sakhalin and Kamchatka...> The work in the Ust-Bolsheretsk settlement area will directly affect the quality of telecommunications services in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug," the report says.
The company clarified that the work with the temporary shutdown of the highway will take at least two days, the exact dates will be known three to four days before the start, depending on the weather. For the Chukotka Autonomous Region, Kamchatka Krai and Severo-Kurilsk, this will lead to temporary interruptions in communication quality. During this period, telecommunication services will be provided via satellite channels with limited bandwidth.
Rostelecom assured that it will ensure the priority use of the satellite resource to support vital services such as ATMs and gas stations in order to minimize risks to the public and the economy.
In Kamchatka, on September 17, it was reported that local retail chains began preparing for a temporary Internet blackout from September 25 to 29 due to the modernization of the Sakhalin -Kamchatka underwater communication line. It was clarified that in order to minimize the consequences of the shutdown, all socially significant facilities will be switched to satellite communications.
