- Politico learned about the beginning of the investigation in Paris against Apple because of Siri
The Paris prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into Apple over the collection of recordings by the Siri voice assistant. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on October 6.
The investigation, led by the anti-cybercrime agency (OFAC), followed a complaint filed in February by the French non-governmental organization Ligue des droits de l'Homme, following testimony from former Apple employee Thomas Le Bonnec, who in 2019, while working for the Irish company Globe Technical Services, analyzed recordings made by Siri.
"The investigation should allow us to "get answers to urgent questions." Among them: "How many recordings have Apple made since 2014? How many people are affected? Where is this data stored?" said Bonnek.
In his opinion, these recordings could reveal intimate moments and confidential information of users, which raises concerns about data security.
An Apple representative responded to the investigation by saying that the company had never used Siri data to create or sell marketing profiles.
"Apple has never used Siri data to create marketing profiles, has never made it available for advertising, and has never sold it to anyone for any reason," the company said.
Le Bonnec's complaint, filed with the prosecutor's office, was a continuation of a class-action lawsuit in France and a similar case in the United States, where Apple agreed to settle the lawsuit for $95 million.
On August 12, American billionaire and entrepreneur Elon Musk accused Apple of violating antitrust laws when managing App Store ratings. He stated that Apple does not give companies in the field of artificial intelligence the opportunity to move OpenAI from the first place in the App Store rating and thereby violates antitrust laws.
Bloomberg reported on August 25 that Musk filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI for creating a monopoly and damaging competition in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). In the lawsuit, Musk noted that the integration of OpenAI into the iPhone harms consumers and deprives them of the right to choose.
