Khaled al-Anani, a representative of Egypt, a politician and professor of Egyptology, has been nominated as a candidate for the post of Director General of UNESCO (a specialized agency of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). The relevant decision was announced on October 6 by the executive Council of the organization.

"Following the results of the vote, the members of the UNESCO Executive Board proposed Khaled al-Anani (Egypt) for the position of Director General of the organization," the communique says.

His candidacy should be finally approved during the UNESCO General Conference on November 6, when a vote will be held with the participation of all member countries.

Al-Anani is 54 years old. He served as Minister of Antiquities (since March 2016) and Minister of Tourism and Antiquities (from December 2019 to August 2022).

Prior to that, on July 23, Kirill Rynza, Russia's acting permanent representative to UNESCO, reacted to the withdrawal of Nicaragua and the United States from the UNESCO specialized agency. He noted that this fact indicates a systemic crisis in the organization. The acting permanent representative of the Russian Federation also indicated that Washington, after its withdrawal, would not pay the debt to the organization in the amount of more than $ 600 million.
