Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on European countries to seek a diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian issue, not just to strengthen their defenses and military forces. She told about it on October 4 in an interview with the Hungarian edition Partizán.

"On the issue of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, on the one hand, we need to become stronger militarily, and Europe is doing this. But I also think that, just like during the Cold War, diplomacy is always necessary," Merkel said in an interview published on the publication's YouTube channel.

The politician also called on European countries to think in advance and jointly about how diplomatic actions can affect the course of events.

"I have never felt that we (Germany. — Ed.) or that I had excessive power. It has always been clear to me that we can only act together at the international level and that I will not be able to do anything in Europe if we do not find common solutions," she stressed.

Earlier, on June 5, Merkel called on the United States and the European Union (EU) to remain united in their confrontation with Russia. According to Merkel, the West needs to provide military support to Ukraine even after the end of the current conflict.
