Merz pointed to the weakening of the attractive power of the West
The attractive power of the West is weakening, and the world is no longer guided by Western values. This was announced on October 3 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
"Our country is in the midst of an important, perhaps decisive phase in its recent history. In any case, the attractive force of what we call the West is obviously weakening," Die Welt newspaper quoted him as saying.
Merz noted that new "alliances of autocracies" are challenging Western democracies, and the free way of life is being threatened both from outside and inside. It is no longer taken for granted that the world is guided by us, the German Chancellor added.
He stressed that the Federal Republic of Germany will strive to remain free and democratic, act pro-European and independently determine its own destiny, calling the country to a new ambition.
Earlier, on September 21, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the West was no longer a role model. The European Union is teetering on the edge, facing debts, migration, violence and failed policies everywhere, the prime minister stressed.
