Who is John the Baptist?

John the Baptist, also known as John the Baptist, is the greatest prophet and the last Old Testament harbinger of the coming of Jesus Christ. He was born around 6-2 BC in the family of the righteous Zachariah and Elizabeth, who were maternal relatives of the Mother of God. From a young age, John lived as a hermit in the desert, leading a strict ascetic life — he ate wild honey and herbs, wore camel's hair clothes and fasted in preparation for great service.

At the age of thirty, by the will of God, he went out to the people with a sermon of repentance and baptism in the waters of the Jordan River, calling for spiritual purification. John baptized many Jews, preparing them for the coming of the messiah and pointing to Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God who took upon himself the sins of the world. The baptism of Christ itself became one of the main events linking the Old and New Testaments.

His tireless call for repentance and a righteous lifestyle, as well as his martyrdom, is a symbol of the highest holiness and devotion to God. John the Baptist denounced the illegitimate marriage of Herod Antipas with Herodias, for which he was imprisoned. Later, the Jewish queen achieved his execution through the intrigue of her daughter Salome — during the feast, John's head was cut off. He is considered a martyr of truth and perseverance.
