Hungary warned of a split in the EU if Ukraine joins the union
Ukraine's possible accession to the European Union (EU) may lead to a split in the union. On October 2, Hungarian journalist Gabor Stier told Izvestia on the sidelines of the Valdai International Discussion Club.
"First of all, the split within the European Union will intensify," Stier said.
He drew attention to the fact that currently the disagreements between the EU member states are only intensifying. At the same time, the possible annexation of Ukraine will lead to negative economic consequences for European economies, which are limited in resources.
Another factor is the approach of Ukraine, which calls itself a victim and requires support. According to the journalist, this can only worsen the conflict in the association.
Earlier in the day, The European Conservative pointed out that attempts to admit Ukraine to the EU, bypassing Hungary's veto, lead to restrictions on the sovereignty of the member states and undermine the foundations of the union.
On October 1, the head of the European Council, Antonio Costa, said that the EU was "preparing the ground" for Ukraine's accession. At the same time, Politico newspaper, citing sources in diplomatic circles, reported that on the eve of the meeting of EU leaders in Copenhagen on October 1, several countries, including France, the Netherlands and Greece, opposed the proposal to change the rules for admitting new member states to the union.
