Latvian authorities have deported 74-year-old Russian citizen Grigory, who has lived and worked in the republic for more than 40 years, after he failed a language proficiency test. Deputy of the Jelgava Duma Andreas Pagors announced this on October 2 in his Telegram channel.

"Grigory L., at the age of 74, received a decision to leave Latvia, as he had not passed the language. There are no relatives in Latvia. With the loss of his residence permit in 2023, Grigory L. lost the opportunity to receive a pension, register at his place of residence, and therefore receive assistance from the local government," he wrote.

According to Pagors, Grigory came to Latvia from Ukraine back in Soviet times.

"It is clear that for the Latvian ruling coalition, old people who have worked for the benefit of the country for 30-40 years are not valuable. And if he took a Russian passport — legally and with Latvia's guarantee — then it's easier to get rid of it than to understand it and leave it in the country," the deputy added.

On September 17, it was reported that Latvia had expelled a couple of Russian pensioners who had been robbed after selling an apartment. Svetlana and Vadim Freiman have lived in Latvia all their lives, but recently they failed the Latvian language exam and did not receive a residence permit, which forced them to leave the country.
