Folk signs for October 2: what can and cannot be done
In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Thursday, October 2, and what church holidays are celebrated on this day.
Folk signs for October 2, 2025
In Russia, on October 2, the Trofim and Zosima holiday was celebrated, also known as the Bee Day. From this period on, beekeepers began to prepare the hives for winter: they insulated them, closed the flyers and moved them to a warm place. The honeymoon lasted nine days. Honey had to be present on the table all this time. In the morning, you were supposed to eat a spoonful of honey and drink warm water. It was believed that this ritual strengthens health and gives strength for a whole year.
In the evenings, Trofimov parties were held in the villages. The young people gathered together, bringing honey treats with them, and looked for a mate: the girls chose the grooms, and the boys the brides. Often the gatherings ended with an engagement. It was not for nothing that the saying was popular among the people: "Happiness does not pass by on Trofim." There was also a belief that if you looked intently into the eyes of your chosen one on one of these evenings, he would certainly reciprocate.
Omens were given great importance on the holiday. They were used to determine the weather conditions in the coming months. Special attention was paid to the behavior of bees. According to observations, if bees fly into the hives late, autumn will be delayed. And if the flyers are actively sealing up (the hole that serves as the entrance to the hive), you should prepare for a harsh winter.

What is the church holiday on October 2nd?
On October 2, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Martyr Trofim of Sinada, who suffered for his faith during the reign of the Roman Emperor Probus (the end of the third century). He was originally from Antioch, now a city in Turkey. During one of the pagan holidays, which was accompanied by ritual sacrifices and feasting, Trofim, along with another Christian named Savvati, fervently prayed to the Lord to guide the lost on the path of salvation.
The righteous provoked the anger of the crowd. They were captured and brought before the governor. The martyrs responded to the compulsion to renounce Christ with a resolute refusal. Both were subjected to severe torture. Saint Savvati died from torture, and Trofim was sent to another city in iron boots with sharp nails. He was then thrown into a dungeon, where he was secretly visited by the Christian Dorimedon, tending to his wounds. Both were thrown to be devoured by wild animals, but the martyrs remained untouched. Then they were beheaded with a sword.
On the same date, the Venerable Martyr Zosima of Cilicia, who lived in the IV century, is remembered. Being deeply religious, he did not want to be among the pagans and withdrew into the desert. There he lived among wild animals and birds, gaining the ability to understand their language. One day, Zosima met Dometian, the pagan ruler of Cilicia, by whose order he was imprisoned. Offering to prove his faith, the ruler ordered one of the animals to be brought to the place. At the saint's prayer, a huge lion appeared, after which Dometian freed the saint to deliver him to the emperor. However, Zosima died, having given his soul to God.
Prayers on October 2nd
It is believed that Saint Trofim protects from enemies and helps those who have strayed from the right path. Zosima of Cilicia was popularly called the patron saint of bees and beekeepers. Therefore, prayers are often offered to him for the health of bees and a good harvest of honey. They also turn to him before going hunting or into the forest to protect themselves from attacks by wild animals.
