The endocrinologist spoke about the effect of seasonal foods on blood sugar
Autumn is a period of abundance of seasonal vegetables and fruits: pumpkins, apples, pears, grapes, root vegetables. These foods are rich in vitamins and fiber, but they can hide the danger for people with impaired carbohydrate metabolism. On October 6, Natalia Tananakina, an endocrinologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), PhD, told Izvestia about how they affect blood sugar.
"The mechanism is simple: after consuming foods with a high glycemic index, glucose is rapidly absorbed into the blood, and the pancreas secretes insulin for its absorption. With insufficient physical activity or a predisposition to diabetes, sugar levels may remain elevated, which increases the load on blood vessels, causes fatigue and weight gain," the specialist said.
She explained that in the autumn period, when people move less and stay at home more often due to cold and rainy weather, the risk of blood sugar spikes increases. Foods that seem healthy, such as apples, carrots, and pumpkins, can increase the glycemic load when consumed excessively.
Tananakina stated that to avoid the trap, it is important to combine carbohydrates with protein and fiber. For example, baked pumpkin with nuts or apples with cottage cheese slow down the absorption of sugar. Portion control and regular physical activity are key preventive measures. It is also useful to alternate between foods with a high and low glycemic index, including whole grains and legumes.
"Regular blood sugar measurements help monitor the body's response to seasonal diets. The autumn glycemic trap is not a ban on fruits and vegetables, but proper diet planning, which allows you to benefit from vitamins without provoking sugar spikes," the doctor noted.
An equally important aspect is the drinking regime, as drinks can also contain sugar, she concluded.
On September 23, biohacking expert Maria Molostvova spoke about how important magnesium is for the human body. She clarified that it participates in more than 600 enzymatic reactions necessary to maintain the normal functioning of the body. About 60% of magnesium is found in bones, while the rest is distributed in muscles and body fluids. Magnesium supplements have become a popular way to combat a deficiency of this mineral, but it is important to consult your doctor before taking supplements.
