- A WWII fighter jet lifted from the bottom of a lake in Kamchatka was delivered to Moscow.
The American Bell P-63 Kingcobra fighter aircraft from the Second World War, which had been lying at the bottom of a lake in Kamchatka for almost 80 years, has been delivered to Moscow for restoration. The aircraft, transferred to the USSR under Lend-lease, was discovered in 2023 by an expedition of the Russian Geographical Society and the Expeditionary Center of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, reported on October 1.
The transportation of the fighter from a remote area on a hydrographic vessel was organized by specialists of the Pacific Fleet (Pacific Fleet). An AN-124 Ruslan military transport aircraft flew him from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the capital. It was established that it was operated by Lieutenant Zinedin Mustafayev, who participated in the Kuril landing operation. During a training flight on October 16, 1945, a disaster occurred, and the car sank in Lake Vitamin.
"Only this year we managed to conduct an expedition to lift the aircraft and deliver it to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. And then, I hope, we will successfully deliver it to the hero city of Moscow for restoration," said Anatoly Karemberg, a leading specialist at the Expeditionary Center of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
After the restoration, the fighter is planned to be exhibited in one of the museums of military-technical history. To date, only three copies of Kingcobra have been preserved in Russia, which are on display in Moscow, Monino and Verkhnyaya Pyshma.
Earlier, on September 8, the head of the Russian Underwater Research Expedition, Roman Dunaev, reported that fragments of an American aircraft had begun to be lifted from the bottom of the lake. According to him, the work became a symbolic reminder of the events of 1945 and the participation of Soviet troops in the Kuril landing operation.
