The United States probably will not be able to avoid a shutdown and the suspension of a number of government services, as Republicans and Democrats are unable to come to a common budget option. On October 1, American political scientist Bruce Marks told Izvestia about this.

He noted that representatives of the Democratic Party insist that US President Donald Trump and the Republicans agree to allocate funding, which was canceled as a result of a series of votes in the summer. At the same time, the American leader is unlikely to agree to make such concessions.

"I don't think President Trump will agree. This means that at midnight, with the exception of certain emergencies, the general funding of the federal government will cease, and then the president, according to the law, will be obliged to suspend the work of a number of public services," the expert noted.

Marx added that similar situations had already occurred before, for example, during the presidential terms of former US leaders Joe Biden and Barack Obama.

On September 30, Trump said that a possible government shutdown could be used to cancel a number of "democratic things." In his opinion, this will make it possible to review unnecessary programs and structures, reduce bureaucracy and costs, as well as focus government work on key priorities and increase the efficiency of federal agencies. On the same day, the White House signed a decree on the preparation of the US government for a temporary shutdown.

On September 26, it was reported that the presidential administration was expecting a government shutdown on Wednesday, October 1, and had no plans to negotiate with the Democratic Party. The lack of negotiations and the onset of the shutdown should cause the Democrats "maximum pain."

On September 19, the U.S. Senate rejected a bill on short-term financing of the government, which was supposed to ensure the work of federal agencies from September 30 to November 21. Trump said that after the rejection of this bill, a shutdown is possible in the country.
