According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), Russia has retained its status as the largest exporter of fuel for nuclear power plants in the United States, despite the current ban on imports of Russian enriched uranium. This was reported by Bloomberg on September 30.

"Supplies continued despite legislation prohibiting the import of Russian reactor fuel [...] The ban, which came into force in August 2024, allows the Ministry of Energy to issue exemptions until 2028 if an alternative source is unavailable or if it is determined that the import is of national interest," the publication said.

It is also noted that last year, Congress allocated billions of dollars to the Department of Energy to restore the almost inactive US reactor fuel production facilities.

Earlier, on September 15, it was reported that the United States plans to abandon the use of Russian enriched uranium, but so far it cannot do this completely due to its high dependence on supplies. US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright noted that the United States is moving towards no longer using Russian enriched uranium, but at the moment cannot achieve such a goal.
