Grossi said there was no alternative to maintaining contacts with Putin.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) maintains contacts with Russia during the special military operation in Ukraine due to the lack of alternatives for managing nuclear safety risks. This was announced on September 29 by the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, during the Warsaw Security Forum.
"When the conflict first began, many criticized me for my dialogue with the President of Russia [Vladimir Putin]. However, who else should I talk to? This [maintaining dialogue] allows me <...> to influence the situation [with nuclear safety] in a certain way so that it develops in the right direction," Grossi said.
He also noted that during conflicts between countries, it is necessary for representatives of international organizations to maintain a dialogue with all parties.
On September 25, Putin met with Grossi in the Kremlin during the Global Atomic Forum as part of World Atomic Week. During the meeting, Putin said that cooperation between Russia and the IAEA has been established in almost all areas. According to him, cooperation is taking place in the areas of Russian energy development and Russia's participation in the implementation of projects abroad. The Russian President added that the parties also cooperate on issues of nuclear safety in the world.
Grossi said that many countries would like to cooperate with the state atomic energy Corporation Rosatom. In addition, Grossi added that it is important for him to discuss nuclear safety and nuclear nonproliferation with the Russian side. He also noted that being in Moscow is a great joy for him.
