The Independent assessed Ukraine's chances of regaining the lost territories
Ukraine's chances of regaining the lost territories are extremely low, and the country will not be able to return to the borders of 2022. This was reported by The Independent newspaper, citing a statement by Emil Kastehelmi, a military analyst at the Finnish company Black Bird Group.
"Ukraine could push Russia back to the border that existed in 2022, <... > but only if there was a strict and unlikely set of conditions," the article says.
According to him, the collapse of the Russian army, which "would force it to a large-scale withdrawal of troops, is extremely unlikely."
Castehelmi also expressed doubts that the statements of the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky, that Ukraine has achieved significant success in Donetsk, are reliable.
"Russia is moving forward, and I do not think it is possible that in the current circumstances Ukraine will be able to return all of its lands," Castehelmi said.
Experts of the publication noted that, theoretically, the Ukrainian side always had the opportunity to return 13% of its territory if it followed the rules. According to the newspaper, Ukraine will need "much more help from European allies" to return the territories, including long-range weapons and air defense systems.
On September 27, the head of the Crimean parliament, Vladimir Konstantinov, said that Ukraine would never return the lost territories that had reunited with Russia. He noted that these lands do not rightfully belong to Ukraine, since the state arose as a result of the collapse of the USSR.
On September 26, the leader of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, declared his readiness to talk about new de facto borders of the country if there were no forces to regain the lost territories. He also stressed that Ukraine would be ready to raise the issue of territories diplomatically in the future.
