September 28 — Day of the machine builder: history, traditions, congratulations
Every year, on the last Sunday of September, Russia celebrates Machine Builder's Day, a professional holiday for specialists who create machine tools, cars, engines, rockets and other equipment. In 2025, the date falls on September 28. Read about how the industry was formed in Russia and the world, what traditions are associated with this day and how to congratulate machine builders in the Izvestia material.
Machine Builder's Day – 2025: the history of the holiday
The Day of the Machine builder was established in the USSR in 1966. By a decree of the country's leadership, it was decided to assign the holiday to the last Sunday in September. In 1980, it was included in the list of official holidays and commemorations.
The mechanical engineering profession itself has a long history. Already in antiquity, engineers created complex mechanisms, including wheels, gear systems and gears. The watermill has remained one of the most important achievements for centuries, ensuring the food security of entire regions.
During the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci designed devices resembling the machines and mechanisms of the future. His drawings of machines for processing metal and wood anticipated the discoveries of subsequent centuries.
Mechanical engineering as a separate industry began to take shape in the 18th century, when Europe entered the era of the industrial revolution. Then manual labor gradually gave way to mechanized labor, and the first weaving and spinning machines and steam engines appeared. These inventions changed not only production, but also the socio-economic structure, marking the beginning of the development of modern industry.
The 19th century was a time of rapid growth in mechanical engineering worldwide. Britain, Germany, France and the USA actively improved steam engines, which led to the development of railways, shipbuilding and heavy industry. At the same time, the first metal-cutting machines appeared, which made it possible to produce products in series and with high precision. On this basis, modern standards of mechanical engineering were formed.
In Russia, the process was parallel to global trends. In the 18th century, the first mechanical productions began to appear. In the era of Peter the Great, the foundations of domestic engineering were laid, foundries and mechanical plants were built, steam engines were introduced, and new types of equipment for the textile industry were created. St. Petersburg became one of the centers of the industry, and later other Russian cities joined it.
The 19th century was a time of rapid growth in the number of machine-building enterprises in the country. Car building, the production of agricultural machinery and equipment for railways developed. However, the machine tool industry continued to be heavily dependent on foreign technologies, which became a challenge for the state's industrial policy.
By the beginning of the 20th century, Russia was one of the top five global manufacturers of machine-building products. During the years of industrialization, the Soviet Union became the second largest producer in the world, second only to the United States. The country produced cars, machine tools, airplanes, ships and unique samples of heavy machinery. It was during this period that the state decided to establish a professional holiday, Machine Builder's Day, which was first celebrated in 1966.
Today, mechanical engineering remains one of Russia's key industries. It unites the transport, agricultural, energy, shipbuilding, aviation, tool and machine tool industries. Enterprises are being actively modernized, digital technologies, automation and new design systems are being introduced.
Traditions of celebrating the Day of the Machine Builder
Traditionally, on the eve of the holiday, solemn meetings and concerts dedicated to the Day of the Machine Builder are held at enterprises, the best employees are honored, awards and letters of thanks are presented. The management of the companies organizes corporate events where creative teams and famous artists perform.
Special exhibitions are organized in technical museums, and thematic lectures and meetings are held in educational institutions that train specialists for the industry.
Since the holiday falls on a Sunday, many machine builders celebrate it in the family circle.
Who and how they congratulate on the Day of the machine builder — best wishes
