Church holidays on September 29
On September 29, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Great Martyr Euphemia, who lived in Chalcedon (modern territory of Turkey) in the third century. She was born into the family of Senator Philophron and his wife Theodorisiana. During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian, the saint was arrested for refusing to worship pagan gods. After 19 days in prison, where she suffered hunger and thirst, Euphemia was subjected to severe torture, but with God's help she remained unharmed. Finally, she was given to the beasts to eat, but they did not touch the martyr. Only one bear inflicted a small wound on her, from which the girl died. Euphemia's body was taken by her parents. Subsequently, a temple was built in Chalcedon in honor of the saint, where her relics were laid in a shrine.
Also on September 29, believers remember Archpriest Alexy Mechev. He was born in 1859 in Moscow in the family of the regent of the cathedral choir of Chudovsky. In his youth, he wanted to be a doctor, but his mother insisted that he become a priest. For more than 40 years, Alexy served in the small parish church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker on Maroseika, where he introduced daily worship services. After the death of his wife and meeting with St. John of Kronstadt, he became an elder who received hundreds of sufferers. He possessed the gift of foresight, comforted the grieving, reconciled families. During the difficult revolutionary years, he became a spiritual support for many believers.
