Former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) James Comey, who was charged with giving false testimony in the case of spreading deliberately false information about alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, declared his innocence on September 25.

"My heart breaks for (American. — Ed.) the Ministry of Justice, but I deeply believe in the federal judicial system. I'm not guilty, so let's have a trial," he said in a video message posted on his personal page on the Instagram social network (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

ABC News learned on the same day that a statement released by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia described the charges brought by Comey. It was noted that if they are confirmed, the former head of the FBI will face up to five years in prison.

On August 30, US President Donald Trump announced the possible arrest of Comey and former head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) John Brennan for faking Moscow's alleged interference in the 2016 election process. He called the listed defendants "very, very sick people."
