- The UNRWA Commissioner General reported more than 400 deaths from starvation in the Gaza Strip.
Over 400 people have become victims of famine in the Gaza Strip. This was announced on September 25 by Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
"Today, there are more than 400 people who have been announced to have died of starvation, which means that hunger is, as it were, another epidemic that the population of Gaza is suffering from," Lazzarini said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to the Commissioner General, this situation continues to deteriorate "on a rampage." In his opinion, this negative trend is provoked by the policy pursued by Israel, due to which the UN UNRWA, which has the opportunity to deliver food to the residents of Gaza, has been unable to do so since March of this year.
On August 23, the UNRWA press service reported that Israel had blocked the possibility of delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. The ministry clarified that they have the opportunity to load 6 thousand trucks for residents of the enclave — the organization's warehouses in Egypt and Jordan are overflowing, but the cargo cannot pass the blockade.
