Putin welcomed Grossi's willingness to run for the post of UN Secretary General
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko welcomed the willingness of the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, to nominate his candidacy for the post of UN Secretary General. This was announced on September 25 by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in an interview with reporters.
Grossi was among the leaders of the foreign delegations with whom the Russian president spoke with the IAEA Secretary General on the sidelines of the Global Atomic Forum earlier in the day.
"When the leaders sat on the sidelines before the forum, they really welcomed Mr. Grossi's willingness to nominate his candidacy," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
Peskov added that he had not heard any other opinions on the issue.
Earlier, on September 24, Bloomberg learned that Grossi had put forward his candidacy for the post of UN Secretary General, using his influence to attract Washington to his side. For the first time, the head of the IAEA announced his intentions at the end of September, speaking at a small press conference in the context of meetings with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy of the American President Stephen Witkoff.
