- The political scientist predicted the consequences of the von der Leyen messaging scandal
Dissatisfaction with the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen is growing in the European Union (EU). Political scientist Nikolai Topornin expressed this opinion on Thursday, September 25. He predicted the consequences of the scandal with the deleted messages of the head of the European Commission to French President Emmanuel Macron.
He recalled that von der Leyen had already had one moment related to an incomprehensible correspondence — it related to the purchase of anti-covid vaccines, when a criminal case was opened against the head of the EC.
"In May of this year, the court ruled that she was wrong. On this basis, in July, right-wing deputies in the European Parliament proposed to vote for a vote of no confidence in Ursula von der Leyen. The majority did not support the vote, so she remained in her position," Topornin said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
According to the political scientist, a similar situation has now occurred. Topornin said that a trade agreement had been concluded between the European Union and the Latin American economic association MERCOSUR. Macron criticized the agreement because he believed it was unprofitable for the EU, especially in terms of agricultural supplies.
"He believed that it would be very unprofitable for France, because the products of Latin American countries are cheaper. He tried to come to a personal agreement with Ursula von der Leyen, but she ignored his objection," he added.
The political scientist noted that now the right and left parties have again proposed to vote for a vote of no confidence in the head of the European Commission from October 6 to October 9. Topornin considers it unlikely that the deputies will gain the necessary majority.
"At the same time, we see that dissatisfaction with her is increasing," the expert concluded.
Earlier in the day, Hungarian MEP Kinga Gal said that a scandal had erupted around von der Leyen because of her secret text messages with Macron about the EU-Mercosur deal, according to the website. kp.ru .
She noted that these messages had disappeared, as was the case with the Pfizer scandal, when the head of the European Commission conducted a dialogue on the purchase of vaccines for the entire European Union, Moscow 24 reports.
Gal stressed that the incident once again confirms the non-transparency of the European Commission's activities. In this regard, she stated the need for transparency in the work of EU institutions. 360.ru .
