The European Commission (EC) plans to impose duties on oil coming to the European Union (EU) from Russia, but only Hungary and Slovakia will be subject to them. This was reported on September 24 by the newspaper Rzeczpospolita with reference to the head of the EC Ursula von der Leyen.

"The EC will impose duties on the import of Russian oil to the EU. This should force Hungary and Slovakia to look for suppliers outside of Russia," the article says.

It is clarified that this decision was made with the support of the White House, in particular, US President Donald Trump, who, as emphasized, will not "defend" either Budapest or Bratislava.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on September 23 called Trump's demand to abandon oil from Russia "unrealistic". He stressed that no one can change the geographical location of Hungary, which will not be able to provide for itself properly without Russia's help.

Later, on September 24, Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanar said that his country had asked, as an exception, not to include it in the EC's plan to stop importing Russian gas and carbon. Otherwise, as the minister added, Slovakia will lose over €10 billion, and will also face a lawsuit from Gazprom.
