Russia is not asking the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to ease sanctions against the aviation industry, but is demanding that individual states stop violating international law. This was announced on September 24 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"I consider it necessary to make it clear: no one is asking for anything. The Russian Federation demands that the ICAO compel individual Member States to stop violating international law, including the UN Charter. — Ed.) and the 1944 Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention)," her words were published on the ministry's official website.

According to Zakharova, international law is regularly violated by all EU member states, the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Albania, Iceland, Monaco, Norway, North Macedonia, as well as Montenegro and Switzerland.

She added that at the opening of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, the Russian delegation declared the active development of the civil aviation industry, despite the unilateral restrictive measures imposed by a number of ICAO member states in violation of the provisions of the Chicago Convention and other norms of international law.

It is noted that Russian and foreign airlines are increasing traffic volumes and expanding their route network, thereby demonstrating the interest of foreign countries in cooperation with the Russian Federation in the field of air transport.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on September 9 that Western countries regularly violate the principles of the UN Charter, but this does not mean that Russia should abandon international law. According to him, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres ignores the charter of the organization in the situation with Ukraine.
