Psychologist explained the effect of stress on the occurrence of panic attacks
A panic attack is an acute response of the body to a situation perceived as threatening, although there is no objective danger. At such moments, survival mechanisms are activated: the heart rate increases, breathing becomes shallow, muscles tighten. Maria Todorova, a child and family psychologist, told Izvestia on September 25 about what factors can provoke this condition, what psychological or emotional reasons may underlie it.
"The problem is that in modern humans, this system can be triggered not only in real danger, but also under emotional or psychological stress. The trigger may be accumulated stress, internal anxiety, unresolved conflicts, or even severe exhaustion," the specialist said.
She added that for people with hypersensitivity to stress, a small reason is enough for the body to perceive the situation as critical. The reasons for such reactions are often rooted in childhood experiences and attachment patterns. For example, if a child grew up in conditions of instability, lack of support and security, his nervous system may become more vulnerable and hypersensitive to stress.
In addition, according to Todorova, the cause of panic attacks may be hidden emotional experiences, such as suppressed anger, fear of rejection, or a high level of self-criticism. The body begins to show tension that has not been expressed in words and feelings, through strong physiological reactions.
The psychologist noted that it is important to maintain your emotional and physical condition to prevent panic attacks. Regular physical activity helps reduce stress and regulate stress hormone levels. It is also necessary to build a healthy sleep and rest regime, reduce overloads and monitor nutrition. A lifestyle that includes not only work, but also recreation, creativity, and communication with loved ones becomes a necessary support for the psyche.
On August 9, Dmitry Karpenko, Associate Professor of the Department of Polyclinic Therapy at the Institute of Clinical Medicine at Pirogov University, spoke about the differences between a panic attack and a heart attack. A panic attack usually develops without external influence. It may be accompanied by dizziness and a feeling of lack of air. During a heart attack, pain in the heart is pressing, compressing, behind the sternum, accompanied by shortness of breath, increased or decreased heart rate and heart failure.
