With the beginning of the school year, the visual load on children increases dramatically, which poses a serious threat to vision, which is especially vulnerable at school age. Igor Aznauryan, a pediatric ophthalmologist, MD, Professor, founder and head of the Association of Children's Eye Clinics "Yasny Vzor", told about this on Wednesday, September 24. He also mentioned signs that indicate that a child needs a visit to an optometrist.

The specialist attributed the deterioration of academic performance to the alarming symptoms. According to him, sometimes this may be due not to laziness, but to vision problems.

"Difficulties with concentration, rapid fatigue when reading may indicate visual fatigue or spasm of the eye muscle," the ophthalmologist explained in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

He added that squinting and close bending should be alerted when reading or writing a text — these signs often indicate the development of myopia. Usually, the child also complains of blurred vision in the distance and blurring of the contours of objects.

Aznauryan said that redness of the eyes and a feeling of "sand" are characteristic symptoms of dry eye syndrome, which is common in children who spend a lot of time with gadgets.

"Ignoring a child's dry eye syndrome can lead to chronic inflammation and damage to the cornea, which threatens to worsen vision," he warned.

If a child constantly tilts or turns his head when looking at objects, this may be a sign of strabismus or nystagmus, the doctor explained. The specialist added that photophobia and lacrimation may indicate conjunctivitis, keratitis or increased intraocular pressure.

The professor stressed that regular checkups with a pediatric ophthalmologist — at least once or twice a year - will help identify problems in time and preserve the child's eyesight.

In turn, Ekaterina Morozova, a senior pediatrician at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), Ph.D., told RIAMO that children are increasingly facing excessive academic workload, so it is necessary to monitor both their physical and psychological condition. In particular, it is important to carry out preventive examinations by a pediatrician, neurologist, ophthalmologist, the specialist noted.

Earlier, on August 19, it was reported that the Russian government would additionally allocate more than 60 billion rubles for the provision of specialized and high-tech medical care. We are talking about providing medical care using advanced approaches and unique treatment methods used in cardiovascular surgery and neurosurgery, organ transplantation, traumatology, orthopedics, ophthalmology and oncology, the Moscow City News agency clarifies.

Sino Goziev, an ophthalmologist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), Ph.D., told Izvestia on September 14 that vision problems often develop due to excessive eye strain caused by the constant use of gadgets. As a result, the visual muscles stop functioning normally, which leads to eye fatigue and decreased image clarity. Their condition can also be affected by using the wrong glasses or contact lenses.
