The loss of a phone or its theft is a situation familiar to many. At such a moment, it is difficult to predict who will have the device and the SIM card - an honest person or someone who decides to use the number for personal gain. Boris Lopatin, MegaFon's senior expert on fraud investigation, spoke on October 1 about how to quickly regain control of the phone and which settings to enable in advance.

According to him, the first step in case of phone loss is to check the connection. If you cannot reach your number, and your loved ones say that "the subscriber is unavailable," you must immediately suspend room service. To do this, you can use your personal account on the operator's website or call the call center. At the operator's office, the number will be reissued to a new SIM or ESIM after identity confirmation, so you should find out the address of the nearest office in advance and prepare the necessary documents.

The next step is to close access to the data on the phone.

"Find device" — through this service, you can put your smartphone in the lost mode, show a contact for communication, log out of accounts, and even erase data if necessary. It is better to log into banking applications and key services from your home network, change passwords, end active sessions and check if unknown devices have appeared," the expert said.

In addition, Lopatin added, to protect yourself, you need to set a strong password, enable Face ID or fingerprint, and set up an automatic screen lock. The PIN code on the SIM card and the activated "Locator" will help in case of its theft. Also, keep track of contact updates and delete outdated numbers.

If the phone is registered to a child or an elderly relative, it makes sense to enable joint number management in the operator's application, activate notifications of suspicious activity, and limit the ability to change communication settings. Discuss the security rules with your loved ones separately: confirmation codes and passwords are not shared with anyone, even if they are called "from the security service."

The expert concluded that a quick response, such as suspending the number and changing passwords, as well as pre-configured security measures, will help protect your data and financial resources.

On September 10, the Russian Interior Ministry reported on a new scheme of telephone fraudsters who pose as lawyers and convince their victims to buy expensive smartphones. The Interior Ministry recalled that real law enforcement officers or lawyers will not ask citizens to buy equipment or visit unfamiliar places to resolve their issues.
