- Bloomberg learned about Grossi's desire to become UN Secretary General with the support of the United States
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has put forward his candidacy for the post of UN Secretary General, using his influence to attract Washington to his side. This was reported by Bloomberg on September 24.
The publication notes that Grossi intends to remain as head of the IAEA, while running for the highest post at the UN. In order to convince reform-minded countries that he will be able to achieve meaningful change, Grossi is seeking support from the United States and its allies.
For the first time, the head of the IAEA announced his intentions at the end of September, speaking at a small press conference in the context of meetings with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy of the American President Stephen Witkoff.
In addition to the United States, Grossi also discussed his candidacy with representatives of the European Union (EU), India, Japan, Nigeria and Pakistan. He also tried to enlist the support of Russia and China so that they would not vote against his candidacy.
According to an unnamed Brazilian official, such efforts by the head of TAGATE may not be enough — the BRICS countries are unlikely to approve Grossi's candidacy, even despite the open support from the United States.
The Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported on the same day that the UN was facing a deep crisis, its basic ideas were crumbling and the world was no longer listening to the organization. It was clarified that the UN receives criticism from many members of the organization. FT suggests that the UN has a scenario in which it can repeat the fate of its predecessor, created after the First World War — the League of Nations. It took a back seat on the international agenda, having failed to prevent the outbreak of World War II.
During his speech at the UN General Assembly on September 23, US President Donald Trump accused the organization of inaction in resolving global conflicts. According to him, the UN does not support his peacekeeping efforts. The American leader also added that the organization is currently completely failing to realize its potential.
