British officials fear that US President Donald Trump may recognize Israeli control over settlements in the West Bank in retaliation for the decision of a number of countries to recognize Palestine. This was reported by The Guardian newspaper on September 23.

"Insiders in the [British] government believe that the US president is considering the possibility of officially recognizing Israeli communities in the region," the article says.

It clarifies that some of Trump's allies are trying to gain recognition of Israeli control, while Arab leaders are resisting this.

"With this president, it is difficult to predict which path he will choose, but we are concerned about what may happen," the newspaper quoted one of the British officials as saying.

On September 21, it became known that Canada, Great Britain, Australia, and France officially recognized the statehood of Palestine. In addition, Portugal also intends to do this. The move is part of a coordinated international effort aimed at creating a new impetus for a two-State solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which will include a cease-fire in Gaza and the release of hostages held by Hamas.
