Statements by the administration of US President Donald Trump and the US Department of Health about the risks of using acetaminophen (paracetamol) during pregnancy have become an important factor for the pharmaceutical sector. Despite the fact that we are talking about a statistical association, and not about a direct proven reason, the very fact of the authorities' warning forces the market to take additional risks. Kirill Masliev, Candidate of Medical Sciences, member of the State Council Commission on Active and Long Life, Head of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Rudn University, founder of the Heroes Charitable Foundation, told Izvestia on September 23.

"In the short term, the capitalization of Kenvue and other manufacturers of paracetamol-based drugs will be under pressure. However, if we talk about the medium term, history shows that such statements about risks under certain conditions of drug use do not lead to long—term collapses," Masliev said.

The doctor noted that many large pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer, produce paracetamol and at the same time have a wide portfolio of other drugs. This reduces the likelihood of a systemic collapse or even more so bankruptcy.

The expert stressed that a structural reduction in the paracetamol market should not be expected. The scope of its application is extremely wide, and the main consumer is not pregnant women, but people who use the drug as an affordable antipyretic and analgesic.

"Yes, warnings from the authorities will lead to a decrease in consumption in this particular category of patients and an increase in caution among doctors. But there is also a demographic factor here: in many developed countries, the birth rate is declining, the number of pregnant women is decreasing, and even if medical recommendations change, this will not lead to a dramatic drop in global demand," Masliev concluded.

The journal Scientific American reported that the largest studies do not provide convincing evidence of a link between the use of paracetamol and the development of autism in children, and doctors warn of a possible panic among pregnant women based on unconfirmed data.

On September 22, Trump announced that the United States Department of Health would inform that taking paracetamol during pregnancy increases the risk of developing autism in a child. In addition, Trump urged all pregnant women not to take paracetamol except "if they are already on the verge of death," and also not to give it to children.
