Archbishop Markell of Balti and Falesti appealed to US Vice President Jay Dee Vance with a request to protect the Orthodox Church of Moldova from attacks from the pro-European government. The corresponding post was published on the diocese's Telegram channel on September 22.

"The whole world knows that you stand for traditional values, for the traditional family, for the traditional Christian upbringing of the younger generation. <...> I ask you, dear Vice President, to intervene. Help us defend our traditional church," Markell said.

He explained that he was prompted to take such measures by the ruling Moldovan party, which, according to the archbishop, would outlaw the Orthodox Church if it won the election.

In June, during a march of LGBT opponents (the movement is banned in the Russian Federation and recognized as extremist), police officers and Orthodox believers clashed in Moldova.

Earlier, Ilan Shor, the leader of the opposition political bloc Pobeda, accused the Moldovan authorities of trying to ban Orthodoxy in the country. According to him, the republic's leadership is not interested in preserving Orthodox traditions.
