Germany plans to sign defense contracts with Saab and Northrop Grumman for €1.2 billion to equip its fleet of Eurofighter fighter jets with the equipment necessary to use modern missiles capable of destroying air defense systems. This was reported by Bloomberg on September 22, citing sources.

According to sources, the contract may also pave the way for cooperation between Germany and Sweden in the development of the next-generation fighter Future Combat Air System, which should replace the Eurofighter by 2040.

It is specified that the upgrade contract will include the Arexis sensor system from Saab and AGM-88E anti-radar missiles from Northrop Grumman.

According to Bloomberg, the German UAV manufacturing startup Helsing, the British defense company BAE Systems, the Franco-German aircraft manufacturer Airbus and the Italian defense firm Leonardo are also involved in the contract.

Fighter modernization is included in the list of German defense purchases proposed by the head of the country's Defense Ministry, Boris Pistorius, which also include 20 additional fighters and several thousand tanks and armored vehicles. It is expected that the Bundestag may approve these purchases in early October.

Earlier, on September 10, Bloomberg reported that the Bundestag approved the German federal government's plan to purchase three additional Israeli-made Heron reconnaissance drones worth €1 billion. It was noted that the Bundestag also supported the purchase of six-wheeled Patria armored personnel carriers from the Finnish manufacturer Patria Land Oy.
