Tselikov pointed out the problem of large stocks of last year's cars at dealers in the Russian Federation

In Russia, there is still a problem of new passenger car stock from previous years of production at dealers and distributors. At the beginning of the year, stocks were estimated at 500 thousand such machines, by September 2023-2024, 135-140 thousand units remained in stock. Sergey Tselikov, director of the Autostat analytical agency, told about this in his Telegram channel.

"That's a lot for September. If we look at a similar "autumn market picture" of previous years, then a similar size of last year's inventories was observed only in 2009," said Tselikov.

From January to August 2025, 486.8 thousand new cars produced in 2023-2024 were registered for primary registration in the Russian Federation, which is almost two thirds (63%) of the total market volume. At the same time, 125.5 thousand cars of the same years were imported into the country.

Changan brought the most new cars from last year (37.9 thousand units). The sales structure of this brand until September was overwhelmingly dominated by cars from previous years, the expert pointed out. FAW, Knewstar, Kaiyi, Hongqi, Omoda, BAIC, Exeed, Jetour, Soueast, Wey, Aito, Geely, JAC, Tank and other brands also have a high level of sales of last year's machines. At the same time, brands such as Belgee, Lada, Voyah, Chery, Moskvich and UAZ have a minimal share of sales of last year's cars.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that in eight months this year, 70.8 thousand new passenger cars were imported into Russia under alternative import schemes. This is 40% less than in January – August of last year.

On September 20, it became known that Russia has again become the main importer of Chinese passenger cars. The import of cars from this country has increased to the maximum since the beginning of the year. At the end of the summer, the volume of supplies increased by a quarter.
