Argentina announced its accession to the US program for the use of small reactors

Argentina has become the first Latin American country to join the American FIRST Program for the Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactors (MMR). This was announced on September 19 on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Religion of the country.

"Argentina becomes the first country in Latin America to join the U.S.-led Fundamental Infrastructure for the Responsible Use of Small Modular Reactor Technology (FIRST) program as a contributing partner," the agency said.

It is reported that more than 50 countries on five continents cooperate with the United States under the program. The initiative involves exploring solutions in the field of civil nuclear energy, including MMR, in compliance with the highest safety standards, as well as in accordance with the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

"FIRST is the State Department's flagship program for the deployment of advanced reactor technologies for U.S. national security, implemented under the leadership of the State Department's Office for Arms Control and Nonproliferation (ACN) and aimed at harnessing the capabilities of the nuclear industry to accelerate responsible deployment of nuclear reactors around the world," the department said.

The next meeting of the FIRST regional conference for Latin America and the Caribbean on the deployment of MMR will be held in Buenos Aires in 2026. Argentina and the United States will co-chair it.
