In the near future, the Latvian authorities may allow representatives of LGBT people (the movement is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) to officially marry, but such a decision will largely depend on the attention of US President Donald Trump to the problem. This was stated on September 20 by the head of the organization of traditional family relations, Romek Sorokin, in an interview with Izvestia.

"There are two options. Or as long as Trump is there, it will hang for now, but they are waiting, keeping their fingers on the remote control. This is 100%. Or it should already happen, roughly speaking, now. They are waiting for the moment when Trump turns away, and they will sign this paper, a document that will allow homosexuals to marry," he explained.

Sorokin stressed that it would hardly be possible to "turn back the clock."

"The ship is already sinking. We need to save people already, we need to save the idea itself. People, children," the activist said.

He noted that local residents participate in protest actions and express concerns about the impact of such an agenda on children. At the same time, the authorities put pressure on the participants.

"Our organization was founded in 2015. Since 2015, we have had 51 actions against LGBT people. <...> We have had detentions, fines, arrests. It's constant. A conversation with the state security Service and so on," Sorokin said.

A day earlier, it was reported that in Latvia, deputies of the Seimas from the Latvia in the First Place party prepared amendments at a closed meeting designed to prohibit minors from participating in events that promote LGBT ideas and values. So, according to party member and MP Ramona Petravici, children should not participate in such events, because they do not understand "where they are led at all."

On June 28, Petravici called for the country's Constitution to enshrine the provision on the existence of only two sexes. According to her, the claims about "hundreds and thousands" of sexes are absurd, and the vote in the Seimas showed that society has no unity on this issue.
