- The WSJ has learned about the negotiations between the Trump administration and the Taliban
The administration of US President Donald Trump and representatives of the Afghan Taliban movement are negotiating a military presence at the Bagram airbase north of Kabul. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Friday, September 19.
"According to people familiar with the negotiations, representatives of the Trump administration are negotiating with the Taliban to restore a partial US military presence at Bagram Air base in Afghanistan as a springboard for counterterrorism operations," the publication says.
As noted in the article, negotiations have only just begun. On the part of the United States, Adam Beler, the special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, is participating in them.
In addition, it is specified that negotiations with the Taliban may lead to other results, for example, to an exchange of prisoners.
Bagram Airbase was built by the USSR in the 1950s and was used during the Afghan war. Later, it operated as a US military base until 2021, when it was transferred to Afghan forces during the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan.
Earlier, on September 18, Trump announced his intention to return Bagram Air Base. He added that one of the reasons is its strategic location. The airbase is located an hour from the place where China produces nuclear weapons.
On April 17, the Supreme Court of Russia suspended the ban and excluded the Afghan Taliban movement from the list of terrorist organizations.
In September 2021, journalists from the REN TV channel showed footage from the Bagram base, which was abandoned at that time after the withdrawal of American troops from the country.
