Vyborg was flooded due to heavy rains

On the night of September 18-19, a severe thunderstorm with heavy rain passed through Vyborg, resulting in 33 mm of precipitation in the city — almost 50% of the monthly norm. Footage of the flooded city appeared at the disposal of Izvestia on September 19.

Thousands of residents were left without electricity due to the incident.

Due to the flood, traffic was obstructed and street lighting was disrupted. Vyborgsky railway station was isolated from the rest of the city and became virtually an island.

This downpour caused a new daily record for the amount of precipitation in the region. The previous maximum was recorded in 2007 — 30 mm. On Friday evening, rains may update this record again, as precipitation will continue to fall in the north-west of the Leningrad region.
