Archaeologists have discovered a sunken Cleopatra-era port in Egypt.

A group of archaeologists led by Dr. Kathleen Martinez has discovered traces of an ancient sunken port in Egypt, which may help in the search for the tomb of Queen Cleopatra. This was reported on September 19 by National Geographic magazine.

A Dominican archaeological mission led by Martinez found stone and metal anchors, many ancient amphorae, and the remains of an inland port a few miles off the coast of Taposiris Magna.

The discovery is serious evidence in favor of the hypothesis that this particular temple could have been chosen for the joint burial of Cleopatra and her lover Mark Anthony, Martinez added.

In addition, the researchers cleared a tunnel discovered by Martinez and other archaeologists in 2022 and connecting the Taposiris Magna temple with the sea. It is located at a depth of about 12 m underground, and its length is 1.3 km.

Earlier, on August 22, three massive statues from the era of Ancient Egypt and the Roman Empire were lifted from the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea in the port of Abu Kira near the coast of Alexandria in northern Egypt.
