Unexplained weight loss is a serious symptom that may indicate systemic diseases. A decrease in body weight of more than 5% over the past 6-12 months for no apparent reason is a good reason to immediately consult a doctor. She gave an example: for a person weighing 70 kg, losing 3.5–4 kg in six months without dieting and fitness already requires a full-fledged examination.

The doctor elaborated on the relationship of weight loss with hyperthyroidism. The thyroid gland is the "accelerator pedal" of metabolism, she explained. With hyperthyroidism, the body is put into a state of high-speed metabolism, burning calories at high speed, even at rest.

Ivanova also noted that an excess of thyroid hormones can negatively affect the motility of the gastrointestinal tract and the absorption of nutrients.

The expert listed other serious causes of unexplained weight loss, including Crohn's disease, cancer, type I diabetes, chronic infections, gastrointestinal disorders with malabsorption, rheumatological pathologies and depression.

"If you're losing weight without effort on your part, don't ignore this signal. Your body reports a malfunction," Ivanova stressed.

The doctor recommended starting the examination with a visit to a therapist, who will prescribe primary tests and, if necessary, refer you to a specialist endocrinologist, gastroenterologist or oncologist.

On September 1, nutritionist Galina Leonova gave advice on how to calculate calories correctly. To calculate the daily allowance, you can use the Harris–Benedict formula or online calculators. According to the expert, calorie reduction remains the safest way to lose weight, unlike severe starvation. At the same time, it is important to maintain a feeling of fullness and choose high-quality products.
